Ambassador Kirsten Hillman announced Tuesday that she will leave the post in the new year, but plans to “remain available” to Canada’s negotiating team as it navigates a tumultuous relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump and the review of the North American trade pact. (The Logic)
Talking point: The lawyer and longtime public servant arrived in Washington, D.C., in 2017 to help negotiate the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement that replaced NAFTA during the first Trump administration. She had previously been Canada’s chief negotiator for the Trans-Pacific Partnership trade deal. She became permanent ambassador to the U.S. in March 2020, days after the COVID-19 pandemic shut the Canada-U.S. border for non-essential travel. Prime Minister Mark Carney, who tapped Hillman to lead trade talks with the White House, is reportedly considering Mark Wiseman, a former BlackRock executive and former CEO of the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, as her replacement.
