Canada’s ambassador to the U.S. Kirsten Hillman said Tuesday she remains confident U.S. President Donald Trump will lift all tariffs on Canadian goods as part of an economic and security deal Prime Minister Mark Carney hopes to secure later this month. (The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: “That’s our goal, that’s what we’re fighting for,” Hillman, who is Canada’s chief negotiator in the trade talks, said at a Canada Day celebration at the embassy in Washington, D.C. Trump has reached tariff-reducing deals with three countries so far: Vietnam, which he announced Wednesday, the United Kingdom and China. None of them remove tariffs entirely. Negotiations with Canada resumed Monday after the Liberals decided to repeal Canada’s long-planned digital services tax. Trump had abruptly called off the talks Friday after Ottawa said it would push ahead with the three per cent tax that would have mainly affected U.S.-based digital giants. Amazon applauded the decision to repeal the tax.
