Talking point: The fentanyl crisis is one of Trump’s many stated reasons for tariffs on all Canadian goods. Trump granted Canada a 30-day reprieve after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau promised to list drug cartels as terrorist organizations and devote $200 million to intelligence needed to tackle transnational organized crime—on top of $1.3 billion already earmarked for border security measures. Trudeau also pledged to create the position that’s now held by Brosseau, a former deputy RCMP commissioner who was also the prime minister’s deputy national security and intelligence adviser. The news release noted less than one per cent of the fentanyl seized at the border comes from Canada, before adding “any amount of fentanyl is too much.”
