Talking point: The strategy, which hikes the spending plan from an earlier $24-billion estimate, includes $21 billion to upgrade the province’s power system, $10 billion on greenhouse gas reduction efforts and $5 billion on new grid connections. It comes after B.C. imported record-high levels of electricity last year as it struggled to generate enough power to meet growing demand. The province’s strained power grid—which mainly runs on hydro power—has led to shortages throughout the province. For example, LNG Canada, the $40-billion liquified gas project led by Shell and others, could be forced to burn natural gas due to a lack of emissions-free power sources.
