The parent company of CTV said it will initiate an independent workplace review after backlash over its dismissal of the chief anchor and journalist. It announced the move in a statement signed by Bell Media president Wade Oosterman and Karine Moses, senior vice-president of content development and news, adding that it has always taken matters of discrimination “very seriously.” (The Logic)
Talking Point: According to employment lawyer Waheeda Ekhlas Smith, the review may explore potential systemic issues at Bell as well as specific circumstances involving LaFlamme. “The results may be made public, in terms of the conclusion, but any evidence leading up to it, which witnesses they spoke with—all that is likely going to be kept confidential,” Smith said. Viewers and industry members alike have questioned the motivations behind LaFlamme’s departure, which she unexpectedly announced on Twitter earlier this week. The decision to launch a workplace review also follows a CTV town hall meeting on Thursday, in which staff members asked if LaFlamme’s dismissal was related to her age or gender. Moses responded, “Not at all. Seriously, I’m a woman. I’m a woman. I’ve been here for 25 years. And do you really think that I would fire a woman because she’s a woman?”
