B.C. Premier David Eby will cut short a trade trip to China to return to Vancouver on July 2 for a “potential announcement of a finalized MOU,” he said Thursday. It could involve federal funding for the George Massey Tunnel replacement in Metro Vancouver, and the North Coast Transmission Line, BC Hydro’s multibillion-dollar project to expand the electrical grid in northern B.C., among other projects, he said. Talking point: The timing would line up with Alberta’s plan to submit its proposed one-million-barrel-per-day pipeline to the federal Major Projects Office by July 1. The federal government has said Alberta’s project cannot advance until a deal is reached on the proposed Pathways carbon capture project. The oilsands industry first proposed the multibillion-dollar initiative in 2021, but it has remained in limbo over cost concerns. The Globe and Mail reported Friday that Ottawa may be willing to further backstop Pathways using funding sources such as the Indigenous Loan Guarantee Program and Canada Growth Fund.
