Australia, U.K., U.S. to form military-technology partnership

The AUUKUS working group will share information on AI, cybersecurity and other defence-equipment fields, sources told Politico. As part of the deal, Australia will also reportedly acquire nuclear submarines using U.S. and British technology. Defence Minister Harjit Sajjan’s office did not directly answer The Logic’s questions about whether Canada was aware of and sought to join the group. “Canada welcomes cooperation between Five Eyes partners on defence technology and research to strengthen our partnership,” said spokesperson Daniel Minden. (Politico, ABC, The Logic)

Talking point: The Biden administration is reportedly looking to forge multiple tech alliances in the Asia-Pacific region, implicitly focused on China. That includes a digital-trade treaty and a new grouping of “techno-democracies” to coordinate policy on issues like data and AI. Canada is a potential participant in both efforts; in April, Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne told The Logic he was interested in the latter proposal.
