Talking point: Prime Minister Mark Carney introduced the Major Projects Office last year to fast-track projects deemed to be in the national interest, though critics have said the process is too slow and doesn’t apply to most projects. Past governments have tried to fix Canada’s regulatory approval process, but their efforts have been “limited, short-lived, and insufficient,” the council said in its report. The current geopolitical uncertainty and years of weak growth have intensified the need for Canada to make changes and compete for capital, it said.
