At the company’s Worldwide Developers Conference, CEO Tim Cook said the AI system will be available on new versions of the iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems, letting users manage notifications, summarize emails and generate images. Talking point: Apple is entering the generative AI race late and must now play catchup with Microsoft, Google and other rivals that have already started integrating the buzzy technology into their products. That strategy has worked for the company in the past, however. Smartphones, smart watches and virtual reality headsets were all established product categories before Apple launched the iPhone, Apple Watch and Vision Pro, respectively. Apple is betting new AI technology will give customers a reason to upgrade those devices and others in a push to turn around sluggish sales growth since the pandemic.
