Tech giants will have to pay a tax of two or three per cent on revenues they generate in New Zealand. Revenue Minister Stuart Nash said the tax could be implemented later this year. The country has required companies like Netflix to collect and remit sales tax on digital-service purchases since 2016. In October 2019, the so-called “Amazon Tax” will come into effect, which will require companies to collect sales tax for goods purchased online valued at NZ$400 or less. (New Zealand Herald)
Talking point: This would bring in at most about NZ$80 million ($73 million). The real goal here is to level the playing field for New Zealand companies facing a competitive disadvantage because they have to pay taxes the foreign tech giants don’t. In Canada, the federal government panel examining changes to broadcasting and telecommunications laws—which could include more tax obligations for tech giants—is reporting back on potential changes in 2020, well after the next federal election.
