Talking point: Because 5G technology provides more reliable wireless connectivity, it’s important in autonomous-vehicle development—in Canada, companies like Uber and RIM are doing key autonomous vehicle research. Canada is far behind China on establishing 5G, however, which could deter some companies from operating in the country due to a lack of infrastructure. Canada is in the midst of a cybersecurity review of Huawei, a potential 5G partner that already works with Telus and Bell, and it’s planning an auction for the wireless spectrum that supports 5G in 2020. Telecoms like Telus have said the auction has to happen this year, as companies start releasing 5G-capable smartphones.
