Talking point: The order doesn’t provide significant detail into how the U.S. will position itself as an AI leader, nor does it earmark any funding for AI initiatives. According to a UN report in late January, the U.S. and China are leading in AI patents globally. While Canada has dedicated $125 million toward an AI strategy and is home to AI hubs like the Vector Institute, Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute and Montreal Institute for Learning Algorithms, the country lags in AI patents. Canada is the only country among the top 10 for AI patents filed to see a decrease in the number of patents applied for between 2016 and 2018, according to a report from The Logic.
