San Francisco topped PitchBook’s list of most developed cities for startups, based on metrics like the amount of venture capital raised and number and value of exits from mid-2017 to mid-2023. Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal were the only Canadian cities on the list of 50, ranking 28th, 38th and 47th, respectively. (The Logic)
Talking point: New York, Beijing, Shanghai and Los Angeles rounded out the top five, in that order. The U.S. and China dominated the list with 20 and 11 cities from those countries, respectively. PitchBook, a business research and data analytics firm, plans to update the dashboard every six months. It “will push founders, operators, and investors to consider which cities around the world are worth looking into,” PitchBook analyst Nalin Patel said in a press release. “When looking at growth specifically, it will be helpful for investors to see which cities are up and coming,” said Patel. Toronto and Montreal ranked slightly better on the growth metric than their overall scores. Vancouver, however, ranked last for growth.
