Talking point: Innovate BC has a budget of $12.5 million in the 2023–24 fiscal year to deliver programs designed to help firms with R&D, commercialization and finding customers. The province’s post-pandemic economic recovery plan leans on the innovation economy, with new facilities for cleantech, agtech and tech in the trades. At IPON, Cowan led the launch of programming and funding for startups and post-secondary institutions to improve commercialization of discoveries made in Ontario. He previously co-founded the Innovation Asset Collective, a $30-million federal pilot program designed to pool patents and help cleantech startups develop and monetize their IP.
