Now that negotiations are complete, scientists here will be able to access grants from an €53.5-billion ($80-billion) segment of the Horizon Europe initiative once the two governments sign an agreement next year. Canada and the EU also launched a new green alliance, including cooperating on carbon border adjustments, which impose duties on emissions-intensive imports from countries with no or lower carbon prices. Talking point: Canada formally began Horizon membership talks in November 2022; the section it’s joining focuses on shared policy interests including health, climate, energy and the digital economy. Following a summit between Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, European Commision president Ursula von der Leyen and European Council president Charles Michel, the two jurisdictions also agreed to cooperate more closely on each of those subjects, via a number of new fora and initiatives.
