Ryan Williams, Conservative shadow minister for pan-Canadian trade and competition, tabled the private member’s bill Thursday, calling on Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland to provide a plan to introduce an open banking system within 30 days of the legislation passing. (The Logic)
Talking point: Open banking would let consumers share their financial data with a third-party provider, such as other banks and fintechs. The target date to implement the first phase of the model was initially January 2023, but has since been delayed without a new deadline. Amid the uncertainty, Canadian fintechs have been campaigning for public support on open banking. South of the border, the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau proposed a personal financial data rights rule in October that would forbid banks from “hoarding” an individual’s data.
