Statistics Canada’s consumer price index rose just slightly less in November than the 6.9 per cent annual increase the agency registered in October, and gasoline prices even declined from the month before. But grocery costs rose faster, with breakfast items—coffee and tea, eggs, cereal and bakery products—all posting double-digit increases from their prices in November 2021. (The Logic)
Talking point: Grocery prices have increased faster than the index as a whole every month since last December, StatCan noted. Those are highly visible to the average consumer (as are mortgage costs and rents, which are also up more than the overall inflation rate). The Angus Reid Institute’s latest poll found the cost of living remained the top national concern for most respondents. The Bank of Canada’s next revision to its trend-setting interest rate is Jan. 25, after StatCan’s next inflation reading, so the central bank will get to see whether the price increases it’s fighting ease again or stay stubborn before making its next call.
