“AI-enabled cyberattacks will become far more widespread and sophisticated,” the 116 signatories warned in an open letter. They called for firms and infrastructure operators to spend more on security and share information on and patches to vulnerabilities, and for governments to share intelligence and co-ordinate responses to incidents. Talking point: OpenAI and Anthropic’s forebodingly toned releases of their latest frontier models, along with revelations that systems from both companies—and one from Meta—had hacked other organizations during testing, have set parts of the tech sector and policymakers on edge. Thursday’s letter calls for frontier AI firms, several of which signed, to do a better job of monitoring and showing what their technology is up to. But it also broadened responsibility for mounting a robust defence to any organization that runs on code, and to governments. Signatories didn’t commit any specific funding or resources to the action for which they’re calling.
