The Liberal government is dropping its plan to make online streaming giants such as Netflix, Amazon and Disney devote a portion of their Canadian revenues to fund Canadian content. (The Wire Report)
Talking point: U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer targeted Canada’s Online Streaming Act last year, when he listed the Trump administration’s conditions for renewing the North American trade agreement. In May, the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) announced it would hike the “base contribution” requirement for major streamers to 15 per cent—triple the 2024 rate already being challenged in court. Culture Minister Marc Miller then asked the CRTC to go back to the drawing board and announced $600 million in annual government funding for the Canadian entertainment industry. A July 17 letter filed in the Federal Court of Appeal said the government now plans to replace the base contribution requirement altogether with government funding.
