Canada must change its laws for online streaming and news if it wants the North American trade pact to survive a coming review, U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer told Congress as he outlined the Trump administration’s conditions for renewing the deal. (The Logic)
Talking point: In remarks published Wednesday, Greer said it would not be in the “national interest” of the U.S. to “rubber stamp” the trilateral agreement without resolving its “shortcomings.” Greater access to the supply-managed dairy market topped the list of complaints against Canada, but he also flagged the law requiring foreign streaming services, such as Netflix, to fund Canadian content as discriminatory against U.S. tech firms. The Online News Act, which prompted Meta to ban Canadian news links from its platform, also got a mention. So did the bans on the sale of U.S. alcohol that some provinces brought in to retaliate against tariffs.
