Women employed in Canadian tech sector rose slightly from a year ago: Survey

The representation of women working in the country’s technology industry ticked up from 33.2 per cent in 2021 to 35.8 per cent in 2022, according to a nationwide survey by Vancouver-based Tech and People Network. “It’s a small but compelling increase,” said TAP CEO Stephanie Hollingshead. The data is based on a poll of 123 employers on over 10,000 employees’ self-identified demographics. (The Logic)

(The Logic)

Talking point: This is the organization’s third annual Diversity in Tech Dashboard, but its first nationwide report. Hollingshead said she was also encouraged by the number of workers that identified as Indigenous, which, although still under the national figure of five per cent, has doubled from 0.7 per cent last year to 1.4 per cent this year. The number of employees identifying as 2SLGBTQQIA+ increased from 8.3 per cent to 9.8 per cent while two in five workers identified as a visible minority compared to one in five in the general Canadian population. The report also found that 40 per cent of the 193 Canadian tech firms it surveyed have company-wide diversity, equity and inclusion goals, while another two in five companies said they are developing them, the survey found. “Where we see real rubber hitting the road change is when companies actually put some demographic targets in place,” said Hollingshead.
