Canadians shifted their car-buying preferences back to internal combustion engines last year amid changing EV policies, says an annual survey tracking auto consumer trends. (The Logic)
Talking point: Canadian data from the 2025 EY Mobility Consumer Index Study said of the roughly 46 per cent of respondents who plan to buy a car within two years, 58 per cent would prefer an internal combustion engine—up from 44 per cent in 2024. Thirty-six per cent said they would choose some kind of EV, including plug-in hybrids, down from 50 per cent the previous year. Canadians were surveyed months before Ottawa announced it would lift steep tariffs on some Chinese-made EVs and bring in a new federal rebate. “I think a lot of consumers may have been wondering when these incentives would return, and it was something that perhaps was delaying people’s purchases,” said Jennifer Rogers, automotive lead at EY Canada.
