Bitove and former business partner Paul Rivett are said to have reached a deal after moving into mediation-arbitration to split the assets of NordStar Capital, which they used to purchase the parent company of the Toronto Star in a $60-million deal in 2020. Sources told The Globe and Mail Bitove will also retain a stake in VerticalScope Holdings. (The Globe and Mail)
Talking point: Bitove and Rivett had set out to revive the company’s newspaper holdings, but their professional relationship deteriorated after repeatedly clashing over business plans. In a court application filed by Rivett on Sept. 2 seeking to dissolve NordStar, the two co-owners’ relationship was described as “irrevocably impaired.” On a TVO panel last Thursday, Bitove said he wanted a “quick divorce.” The website of NordStar, which also owns several online properties including gambling firm NorthStar Bets, was made private at the time of publication.
