Ben Makuch will have to hand over records of his communication with Farah Mohamed Shirdon, an alleged ISIS member who was killed last year. In 2015, the RCMP filed an order compelling Makuch, who wrote three stories about Shirdon and his ties to the Islamic State, to produce all their communications. Some of their conversations are said to have taken place on Kik, the Waterloo, Ont.-based messenger app, which does not store records on its servers. The court ruled unanimously that the interest in investigating and prosecuting crimes outweighed the media’s right to gather news without government interference. (CBC News)

Talking point: Several media organizations and free expression advocacy groups intervened in the case, arguing a ruling like today’s would cause irreparable harm to journalists’ ability to guarantee source protection.
