OMERS Ventures partner sees ‘tale of two cities’ among companies raising funds

At SaaS North on Wednesday, Laura Lenz, a partner at the Ontario public pension fund’s venture capital arm, described an increasingly two-tiered marketplace, where “great companies with fundamentals, with strong metrics, are still raising at premium multiples,” while “a lot of companies that aren’t hitting revenue growth [are] having to raise in a down round.” (The Logic)

Talking point: Within the last month, some companies within the OMERS Ventures portfolio, such as Xanadu and TouchBistro, raised $100-million-plus rounds, while others haven’t. Companies that need restructuring should be focused on ensuring they have a cash runway until 2025, Lenz said. “We need to be a bit more capital efficient,” she added. “I think the founders that are here today have the opportunity to start their businesses, grow their businesses in a really capital-efficient way.”
