Talking point: Samaroo co-founded WonderFi and led it from a small upstart focused on decentralized finance to a Canadian crypto leader that owns Bitbuy and Coinberry, two of the sector’s most prominent regulated trading platforms. Backed by crypto billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried’s platform FTX and Shark Tank investor Kevin O’Leary, WonderFi has ambitions of competing with the likes of Wealthsimple by expanding further into stock trading. The release announcing Samaroo’s departure said WonderFi plans to focus on three revenue streams under its new leadership: digital assets, stocks and staking products, which allow investors to earn yield by locking up cryptocurrencies that use a proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, such as Ethereum. “We have established ourselves as one of Canada’s leading crypto exchanges, and we are now confident that we can expand our product offering,” Skurka said in an email to The Logic.
