Can Canada’s automotive industry scale fast enough to meet increasing demand?
The Canadian government is banning the sale of carbon-emitting passenger vehicles by 2035, signalling leading manufacturers to transition to electrification. But while the automotive industry is changing, the age of the internal-combustion engine (ICE) isn’t moving into the EV era fast enough. With continued difficulties sourcing raw materials, as well as infrastructure shortages, inflation, and supply-chain issues, the industry will need to innovate in order to match pace with consumer demand and meet regulatory requirements.
The Logic’s Shift sat down on Wednesday, Sept. 28, for the second in a series of conversations on Canada’s commitment to require 100 per cent of car and passenger-truck sales to be zero emissions by 2035.
The event was an intimate fireside chat on the state of the automotive industry in Canada, hosted by David Skok, The Logic’s CEO and editor-in-chief, and featured Anita Balakrishnan, The Logic’s electric- and autonomous-vehicles reporter, with opening remarks from Claudia Sciama, managing director of auto and consumer goods at Google.
