Talking point: Popping into the corner store on your way home no longer appears as convenient as before, with many people still working from home and upstarts like Gorillas offering 30-minute delivery of convenience-store products. Hannasch said the company is exploring more delivery options, but they tend to be most profitable in urban markets. “There’s a lot of VC money in the space fuelling these expansions. We’re closely watching,” he said. The company, which has started investing with its own venture fund, opened a retail-innovation lab this year at McGill University, reminiscent of the cashierless Amazon Go model. Meanwhile, SkipTheDishes, which includes 7-Eleven, Petro-Canada and Shell stores on its app, now itself sells household goods and groceries at Express Lane locations in Winnipeg and London, Ont.
