Murad Hemmadi becomes the first reporter dedicated to covering artificial intelligence.  Read more in this note to staff from the newsroom’s managing editor, Jordan Timm:

We are delighted to announce that Murad Hemmadi is moving into a new beat at The Logic: he will be our first reporter dedicated to covering artificial intelligence.

Since joining The Logic at its launch six years ago, Murad has delivered agenda-setting coverage of the federal government’s business, innovation and trade policies. He has done so while juggling an assortment of other files, covering everything from Shopify to immigration.

AI has captured our readers’ imagination since the launch of ChatGPT, and it has increasingly become the focus of Murad’s work. He played a lead role in last year’s Superintelligence series, exploring Canada’s place in the world of AI — an assignment that took him to Bletchley Park in the U.K. to cover the global AI safety summit. He has interviewed practically every major Canadian player in the field. I don’t need to tell you, his teammates, that his knowledge of the subject — and his passion for it — are unmatched.

When we drafted this job posting, we did not expect Murad to apply. We are delighted that he did. We can’t think of anyone better to build this important new beat for us.

Murad will be moving to Toronto later this year. He will continue in his current role for now, as we move quickly to hire another reporter for our Ottawa bureau.

Please join me in a round of congratulations.

– Jordan
