Letter from the editor: A growing news business

It’s been an extremely busy time at The Logic. After partially closing our seed round of funding this summer, we’ve been growing with some key hires.

At a time of so much depressing news about media—cutbacks, the erosion of trust in journalism—it’s important to share good news when we can.

My regular column will resume in the coming weeks, but in its place, I want to introduce you to the newest members of our team. These are all people deeply committed to realizing the vision of The Logic as a publication focused on great journalism, and on putting you, our readers, first.

Later this fall, Jenna Zuschlag Misener will become our chief operating officer.

This position is vital to our next phase of growth as a membership-driven publication. Jenna will help me manage investor relations and our new board of directors (which will be announced soon), run our business operations and oversee our marketing, partnership and community-building efforts.

Her track record is impressive.

In her three years as its executive director, Jenna elevated the Banff Forum to new heights. She put in place processes and governance protocols, built out its vibrant community and organized the non-profit’s must-attend annual conference for young Canadian leaders.

Prior to her time at the Banff Forum, Jenna spent four years as executive director of the Juno Beach Centre in France. She’s also held programming roles at Historica Canada, Hot Docs and Alliance Atlantis.

Along with her impressive resume, Jenna is also a creative force. She produces the popular—and funny—podcast and live event series Grownups Read Things They Wrote as Kids (shameless plug).

Jordan Timm has joined The Logic as our first-ever managing editor.

As The Logic’s most senior editorial person outside of the editor-in-chief, Jordan will shape our editorial vision, lead our talented reporting and editing team and expand our coverage as we reach more of you in more places.

He comes to us from the National Post, where he was the executive producer of news. He’s also held senior editorial roles at the Ottawa Citizen and Canadian Business, along with a stint at The Walrus.

Adam Straker is our new head of sales.

The position is an essential one in growing our burgeoning corporate sales and sponsorship businesses. Beyond brand affinity, we have had corporate, government and academic clients show a keen interest in The Logic to help them transform their own organizations through our journalism.

Adam joins us from the Toronto Region Board of Trade, where he spent almost six years in increasingly senior sales roles, most recently as the senior manager for member engagement.

When Adam and I first met, he asked key questions about our values. He’s someone who truly believes in the journalistic mission—which is why I’m so delighted to have him on board.

To find out how we can help transform your business, you can reach out to Adam directly at [email protected].

And, finally, Caroline Mercer has rejoined The Logic as our first audience engagement editor.

It’s a fitting return for Caroline, who built our first marketing campaigns as an intern during the summer of our launch. Since then, Caroline wrapped up her master’s at Carleton and spent the summer at the Canadian Medical Association.

Of course, none of this happens without you. We listen constantly to your feedback and understand that you want more of our quality journalism in your inboxes every day. Your subscription allows us to expand our coverage and to continually improve our product.

We’re excited to welcome these new members to our team. I encourage you to reach out to all of them with your ideas, feedback and congratulations.

Thanks for coming along on this incredible ride.
