Talking point: An HBC spokesperson said in an email to The Logic that the pop-up concept is a “fun and nostalgic experience with one of HBC’s most beloved brands” and more could open at other Hudson’s Bay stores. Zellers launched in 1931 and grew to more than 100 stores before hitting a tumultuous time in which HBC later acquired the chain. The retailer eventually sold 189 Zellers store leases to Target, which ended up flaming spectacularly out of the Canadian market itself, and closing the remaining locations. HBC has recently doubled down on a “digital-first” strategy, after separating its e-commerce and brick-and-mortar businesses.
