Talking point: Noront’s business developing nickel, copper, platinum, palladium and chromite deposits in Ontario has been bid up since May, in part because Wyloo is exploring its potential for the battery industry. Wyloo’s latest offer is a 358 per cent premium to Noront’s unaffected May 21 closing share price, but BHP has been willing to raise its offer in the past. Either way, mining the Ring of Fire region is no sure thing. The Neskantaga First Nation is suing the provincial government, saying it failed to consult them on mining on their land. The nation has faced more than two decades of boil-water advisories—the longest in Canada—and says a road planned across the area’s significant wetland region would “change our way of life forever.”
