Talking point: Canada is competing against other countries to build its supply chain for battery-electric vehicles, including critical minerals, which now fall under tightened foreign-investment rules. Meanwhile, Wyloo, owned by mining billionaire Andrew Forrest, made an unsolicited proposal to buy Toronto-based Noront Resources. Noront has been developing nickel, copper, platinum and palladium deposits in the Ring of Fire, an area where Attawapiskat, Fort Albany and Neskantaga First Nations have previously called for a mining moratorium. Noront has promised the “first mine in the Ring of Fire in true partnership with local First Nations.” Wyloo said it will “target” $100 million in contract awards to First Nations businesses, and that the studies may lead it to build a smelter for the electric-car industry.
