The Canadian auto-parts giant is partnering with the autonomous-driving company, owned by Google parent Alphabet, to open a second assembly factory in Arizona, Forbes first reported. Waymo spokesperson Chris Bonelli confirmed to The Logic that it’s working with Magna at its new location in Arizona. Magna’s Dave Niemiec said the 230,000-square-foot expanded factory is currently being outfitted with equipment and could create “hundreds of jobs.” (Forbes, The Logic)
Talking point: Magna, alongside the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, has been a Waymo backer since its 2020 Series A round. Like its rivals, Waymo has hit some stumbling blocks recently, recalling all of its vehicles after a May accident where a vehicle was badly damaged, though no one was hurt. Still, the company said this month that it now drives over 100,000 paid robotaxi rides per week across three U.S. cities. Magna’s deal to help produce Waymo robotaxis comes despite the auto-parts company’s decision earlier this month to cut spending in its high-tech business.
