Unifor national president Lana Payne said she is concerned that Stellantis could turn its Brampton, Ont. auto plant into a “knock-down kit” factory, where Chinese automakers ship kits of auto parts from overseas and perform minimal on-site assembly, employing a fraction of the workforce of a traditional car plant. Stellantis is considering working with China-based Leapmotor in Brampton, Ont., according to Bloomberg, though the automaker has not confirmed the reports. (The Logic, Bloomberg)
Talking point: Stellantis spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin declined to comment specifically on whether it expects workforce reductions for its Brampton plant, reiterating that Stellantis is still evaluating options and would ensure that its investment decision includes “long-term commitment that supports workers and suppliers.” Ontario Premier Doug Ford said a knock-down kit plant would “undermine every single autoworker” and Industry Minister Mélanie Joly said a kit plant would not do enough to support the local supply chain.
