Talking point: Last October, Stellantis announced it would produce the Jeep Compass in Illinois instead of Brampton. Industry Minister Mélanie Joly issued Stellantis a notice of default, saying it had breached a funding contract linked to jobs in Ontario, but has given no update since. In announcing the January deal with Chinese President Xi Jinping, the Prime Minister’s Office said it would “drive considerable new Chinese joint-venture investment in Canada.” Citing unidentified sources, Bloomberg reported Wednesday the discussions with Leapmotor are in the early stages. Stellantis spokesperson LouAnn Gosselin told The Logic the company “is actively evaluating future programs” for the Brampton plan but has “nothing to announce.”
