The ride-hailing company approached advisers in recent months to explore a possible takeover bid for the $20-billion travel-booking platform, the Financial Times reported. Talks were in the very early stages and a deal may not happen, sources told the FT. (Financial Times)
Talking point: Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi’s long-standing ties to Expedia would likely make for a friendly takeover. He served as the company’s CEO from 2005 until he took the helm at Uber in 2017, and remains non-executive director on Expedia’s board. Uber has been growing beyond its roots as a taxi alternative, expanding into train and flight booking, food delivery and freight transportation. “Anywhere you want to go in your city and anything that you want to get, we want to empower you to do so,” Khosrowshahi told the Financial Times earlier this week. Buying Expedia—the world’s fourth-largest online travel company, with assets including Hotels.com and Vrbo—would accelerate those efforts, putting it in direct competition with firms like Airbnb and Booking.com.
