Talking point: The original agreement, announced for the U.S. last year, helped push Tesla’s market value over US$1 trillion at the time, even though CEO Elon Musk has said demand often exceeds supply for its vehicles. The expansion comes as Canadian rental car companies are already short of inventory to fill vacationers’ orders. Uber told The Logic these Tesla vehicles at Hertz, which cost about $497 a week in Toronto including insurance and maintenance, are set aside exclusively for the ride-sharing company’s drivers, who get an extra $1 on every fully electric Uber trip. Meanwhile, General Motors CEO Mary Barra said Monday she hopes to outsell Tesla by offering EVs priced well below both the average U.S. auto price of about US$45,000 and Tesla’s starting price around US$48,000.
