Talking point: The CRTC’s conclusions will inform the implementation of the Online Streaming Act, a controversial piece of Trudeau-era legislation that requires streaming giants to carry a certain amount of Canadian content and contribute to original Canadian programming. The commission suggested last year maintaining a point system based on Canadians filling key creative roles in content production. MPA-Canada has said that approach is “outdated,” and called instead for more flexible criteria. U.S. lawmakers, meanwhile, have alleged that the Act discriminates against American companies. Global streamers have already taken the CRTC to court over requirements for them to pay into a fund to support Canadian content creation.
