U.S. election outcomes will spill over into Canada, and a potential Donald Trump win would cause a “shock” to reverberate across the border, Laura Dawson, executive director of the Future Borders Coalition, said at a panel discussion hosted by The Logic. Donald Trump’s non-adherence to trade agreements like USMCA has the potential to “spook” investors, Dawson said. “If the U.S. does not agree to renew [USMCA] within the 2026 framework, it goes into this purgatory within 10 years, where it’s neither alive nor dead.” Kamala Harris also has a protectionist view, she said, and would be “rolling up the drawbridge” to foreign trade, too. Talking point: FDI in Canada declined during Trump’s first term, and there could be another big hit in the post-election period, BMO economist Shelly Kaushik said at the event. “If we could just keep our sanity, we would look a lot more attractive compared to the U.S. and Europe,” Dan Breznitz, Munk Chair of innovation studies at U of T, said in the panel. To attract more foreign investment, Canada shouldn’t mirror the United States’ political discourse, he said, adding that Canada also needs to fix its regulatory and competitive framework.
