Toyota Material Handling temporarily suspended its contractors from working in the Northvolt Ett gigafactory in Sweden, pending a police investigation. Police reopened the investigation after a third Northvolt staffer died at home this year. (Dagens Arbete via Sifted)
Talking point: Northvolt told Sifted it supports the investigation, which comes after police found no cause for suspicion in the first two deaths of Northvolt workers. The company is grappling with several other challenges, including losing a €2-billion contract with BMW and a strategic review of the site where it had planned to build a fourth factory in Borlänge, Sweden. In Canada, the battery startup’s Montreal gigafactory site was vandalized last month. Northvolt has secured widespread backing in Canada in recent years, including $1.34 billion in federal funding, $1.37 billion in provincial funding, and investments from the Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec, Investment Management Corporation of Ontario, Canada Pension Plan Investment Board and Ontario Municipal Employees Retirement System.
