Talking point: Toronto-Waterloo scored well in the consultancy’s “funding” category, which measures the availability of early-stage investment, but relatively weakly for access to globally leading companies and “knowledge,” which uses life-sciences patents as a proxy for innovation through research. Startup Genome founder JF Gauthier, an ex-Montrealer, wrote in the report that the COVID-19 pandemic has accelerated digitalization and spread entrepreneurs far outside Silicon Valley.
