Talking point: Thomvest’s major exits include cybersecurity firm Cylance, which BlackBerry bought in November 2018; financing platforms Lending Club and SoFi, which went public; Toronto-based Ecobee, a smart home device maker that Generac took over in November 2021; and Squamish, B.C.-based Carbon Engineering, which Occidental Petroleum announced plans to acquire in August. Last June, Thomvest joined Toronto-based Cohere’s US$270-million Series C round, making a bet on the booming and expensive business of building and monetizing large-language models.
