Talking point: The owners of Ted Baker Canada—which operates all three brands—filed for creditor protection last month to get “breathing room” while deciding whether to wind down or pursue alternative routes to salvaging the business. Lawyers for the ownership group said in court filings last month that retailers faced “significant” liquidity challenges and have been “unsuccessful” in reducing costs, improving sales and achieving positive cash flow. It’s not the only retailer that’s struggling in Canada as consumer demand softens. Mastermind Toys filed for creditor protection in November, followed by The Body Shop Canada in March.
