Delegates at the Teamsters International Convention voted in favour of a long-term effort to support Amazon’s warehouse and transportation workers in the U.S. and Canada “build power and join a union,” said François Laporte, the labour union’s Canada president, in a statement. (The Logic)
Talking point: The Teamsters will create a new division for Amazon workers. The successful resolution “resolves to maintain standards in Teamster core industries against the threat posed by Amazon and support Amazon workers,” according to a Teamsters statement. The union doesn’t expect a smooth drive. Laporte called Amazon “an anti-union employer the likes of which we have not seen since the 1920s.” The tech giant defeated a unionization effort in Bessemer, Ala., in April. The union that led that drive is challenging the result. Amazon is also in the midst of a court battle in Canada with a union representing Toronto-area contract drivers alleging the company blocked unionization efforts. Amazon has faced ongoing criticism of workplace safety, especially amid COVID-19. Even outgoing CEO Jeff Bezos said the company must do a “better job” for employees.
