Across its Canadian warehouses, Amazon received 9.1 injury reports for every 100 workers. A warehouse in Delta, B.C. reported the highest injury rates over the past four years, with over 20 injuries per 100 workers. Canada’s average rate is higher than that in the U.S., where the company sees 7.7 injuries per 100 workers. (Toronto Star)
Talking point: An Amazon spokesperson told the Star that safety was a “top priority” for the company, and that it has invested in technology, infrastructure and training to “ensure the highest standards to keep our employees safe.” Many of the injuries workers reported were related to overexertion or repetitive motion, as workers are put under intense pressure to work quickly. For most of the 303 injury reports reviewed by the Star, Amazon objected to the claims, arguing there was “no proof of accident,” an “unclear mechanism of injury” or a “pre-existing condition.”
