Canada’s Svante and Switzerland’s Climeworks plan to develop facilities that use both their technologies to “create a game-changer in the industry to be able to do direct-air capture at a smaller-sized plant.” The companies did not release financial details of the arrangement. (Bloomberg)
Talking point: The UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has identified expanding carbon-capture technologies as a solution to limiting global warming to 1.5 C. Svante was one of 12 Canadian cleantech companies named in this year’s Global Cleantech 100 list. It uses nanomaterials to catch and release CO2: a single 3,000 tonne-per-day plant using Svante’s technology can capture more than one million tonnes of carbon annually—equivalent to eliminating emissions from more than 200,000 cars. The company closed its $34-million Series C round in June 2019. Two years earlier, Husky Energy became one of its lead investors.
