The Shopify-backed logistics firm’s current head, Ryan Petersen, tweeted that he’ll become executive chair of Flexport after a six-month transition to bring Dave Clark aboard. Clark resigned last week as head of Amazon’s worldwide consumer division after 23 years at the e-commerce giant and starts at Flexport in September. (The Logic)
Talking point: San Francisco-based Flexport is one of numerous companies working on modernizing an industry that has long relied on paper records and spreadsheets; last fall, Petersen motored around the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach on a boat, tweetstorming prescriptions for clearing their container congestion. In announcing Clark’s hiring, he said Flexport is adding “one of the world’s best operators” for a phase of growth that will emphasize top quality at low prices. Shopify participated in Flexport’s US$935-million Series E, led by Andreessen Horowitz, in February, saying the company addresses one of entrepreneurs’ most daunting challenges.
