Federal Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne brought Canadian business leaders with him to Beijing this week, including chief executives Kevin Strain of Sun Life and Phil Witherington of Manulife. (The Logic)
Talking point: Champagne expects to meet Chinese government and business leaders on a visit designed to “build strategic partnerships and attract new investments” as part of the federal government’s wider push to diversify trade and attract foreign capital amid the U.S. trade war. Scott Brison, the former Liberal cabinet minister who is now vice-chair at BMO Wealth Management, is also on the trip, according to Champagne’s spokesperson John Fragos. Joining them are Vivi Hou, the CEO of Power Pacific, and Alex Tam, the Hong Kong CEO of CIBC, plus others from the financial sector including representatives from TD, RBC, National Bank, CPP Investments, Brookfield and Mackenzie.
