Joelle Pineau is currently a vice-president of AI research overseeing the tech giant’s Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) labs. In a LinkedIn post Tuesday, she said she will leave Meta on May 30. Meta did not directly respond to questions about who would take over from her. (The Logic)
Talking point: Meta originally hired Pineau—a McGill University computer science professor and member of the Mila institute—in September 2017 to head its new FAIR lab in Montreal; she became leader of the firm’s whole AI research network in March 2023. Like other tech giants, Meta is investing heavily in AI. Last year, it brought FAIR into its product development organization, with Pineau reporting to chief product officer Chris Cox. Meta has open-sourced its Llama large language models, and Pineau’s teams have been trying to improve the systems’ ability to plan and reason. Last month, the federal government named Pineau to its new Safe and Secure AI Advisory Group.
